Back to Personal FAQ >

What is the difference between Pixera Professional and Pixera Personal?

The optical block in the Pixera Professional camera is engineered differently in order to accomplish the variable focus function. This allows use of different C-Mount lenses which make the camera more versitile for different applications.

Back to Personal FAQ >

Is the Pixera Camera System more difficult to use than a conventional camera?

The Pixera Camera System is just as easy to use as a conventional point-and-shoot camera. The Pixera Camera lets you capture any digital image with just the press of a button. Simply open the viewfinder and frame the subject in the viewfinder window. Click the image capture button and the camera captures the image exactly as it appears in the viewfinder.

Back to Personal FAQ >

Is there a way to avoid connecting a computer to the Pixera Camera to take pictures?

No. The Pixera Camera is a tethered unit. It has to be connected to a computer at all times. The advantage of a tethered unit is that you can preview the image, then capture it as you see through the viewfinder window. In addition, it can capture high resolution images that cannot fit on a flash memory card.

Back to Personal FAQ >

Do I need a video capture card/frame grabber to use the Pixera Camera?

No. Both the Professional and Personal comes with its own PCI card. The Pixera Camera itself generates separate Red, Green, and Blue information that yields much higher quality color than the chrominance/luminance information produced by normal video cameras. This higher color quality is in addition to the already improved resolution possible with the Pixera Camera.

Back to Personal FAQ >

How is the Pixera Camera System powered?

The Pixera Camera unit uses the power of its host computer system. It requires only 1.2W of power. This low power consumption makes the camera system ideal for mobile applications.

Back to Personal FAQ >

How long is the interface cable?

Pixera's PCI (Desktop) interface cable is 10 feet long. An additional 30' PCI cable is available separately for the PCI Interface camera only.

Back to Personal FAQ >

What are the system requirements to use the Pixera Camera System?

System requirements for Windows 95 and Windows NT platforms are Pentium processor and 24MB RAM (32MB recommended). For the Macintosh platform: PowerPC or higher processor, 24MB RAM (32MB strongly recommended) and System 7.5.3 or higher.

Back to Personal FAQ >

How does the Pixera Camera achieve a one-million-pixel resolution from a 1/3" CCD?

Pixera camera achieves the one million pixel resolution through its innovative, patented optical image capture mechanism. The Pixera camera captures four frames of the image and overlays them, increasing the resolution of the image to four times the resolution of the CCD chip (250,000 pixels).

Back to Personal FAQ >

What is the pixel size?

The pixel size of the CCD is 9.6(m (H) x 7.5 (m (V).

Back to Personal FAQ >

What is the image size of the CCD?

The image size of the 1/3" CCD is 4.9mm (H) x 3.7mm (V).

Back to Personal FAQ >

What is the image resolution of the CCD chip?

The resolution of the CCD chip is 516x492 pixels.

Back to Personal FAQ >

What is the depth of field?

The depth of field of Pixera Personal model with the standard lens provided is 1(1/2 inch. The depth of field for the C-Mount Pixera Professional model depends on the lens used. Using a lens with a built-in iris will also allow the depth of field to be adjustable.

Back to Personal FAQ >

What is the ASA rating for the camera at normal exposure?

The ASA rating of Pixera digital camera is ASA 100.

Back to Personal FAQ >

What is the dynamic range of the Pixera Digital Camera?

The dynamic range of the Pixera Camera system is 3x signal to noise.

Back to Personal FAQ >

What is The Pixera Camera system's sensitivity?

ISO100 equivalency.

Back to Personal FAQ >

What light sources can be used with Pixera's Digital Camera?

Any light source can be used. It functions best under general lighting conditions.

Back to Personal FAQ >

Does the Pixera Camera have a built-in flash?

No. The Pixera Camera provides high light sensitivity and a wide range of shutter speeds. This means that the Pixera Camera can take good quality pictures in poor lighting conditions. A flash will not be necessary for most lighting conditions.

Back to Personal FAQ >

Can the Pixera Camera capture 24-bit color images even if the display (monitor) only supports grayscale?

Yes. The images just won't display as well on a system that does not have high color (16-bit) or true color (24-bit) display. They can be printed and saved as 24-bit color images, however.

Back to Personal FAQ >

Can the Pixera Camera capture an image that has better resolution than the display?

Yes. The Pixera Camera will capture an image at the resolution you choose regardless of the resolution the monitor can display.

Back to Personal FAQ >

How is white balance set? Is manual override for exposure and color balance available?

Auto-white balance is set by default or it may be set in an off position prior to image capture. Auto-white balance allows the color balance to be adjusted automatically under varying lighting conditions. QuickTime VR and microscopy users may wish to use our manual override variable white balance feature in order to preserve color contrast and balance across a sequence of captures. Semi-Auto white balance is a new feature that allos the user to callibrate the white balance for different lighting conditions.

Back to Personal FAQ >

How long does it take to capture an image?

On the Windows 95 platform with a Pentium 200 system, the image capture and process time of a high resolution image is about 5-7 seconds. On the Macintosh platform, the image capture and process time of a high resolution image is 5-10 seconds.

Back to Personal FAQ >

Where are the digital images stored?

The images are stored directly on the host PC's hard disk for easy access. The number of images stored is limited only by the host PC's hard disk space and the size of the image files. A high resolution image at 1280x1024 dpi consumes 3.7MB of memory, but can be reduced by an average of 90% through .JPEG compression, which is supported by Pixera.

Back to Personal FAQ >

What are optimum printing sizes for captured images?

The camera's image resolution can be up to 1260x960 pixels (1280 x 1024 on Macintosh) providing acceptable print size for pictures up to 5.5"x 4.5".

Back to Personal FAQ >

How big is the image area for an image taken at minimum focusing distance using the Pixera Personal and using the Pixera Professional camera?

Using the Pixera Personal camera, the image area is 3"x4" with the minimum focusing distance of 8 inches. The image area is 1.1"x1.7" using the 1 inch minimum focusing distance with the Pixera Professional model.

Back to Personal FAQ >

How big is the image file for each picture?

The size of an image file depends on the resolution the image was taken with. The maximum uncompressed image size is 3.7MB, at 1260 x 960 pixels resolution (Windows platform). However, when compressed using .JPEG file format, the file size of a high resolution image is between 100k to 200k on a Windows platform and between 50k to 300k on a Macintosh platform.

Back to Personal FAQ >

What type of image compression does the camera use?

The camera uses the industry-standard, adjustible JPEG compression.

Back to Personal FAQ >

What is the resolution of 4"x5" and 8"x10" prints, in pixels per inch (ppi)?

The resolution of a 4"x5" print is 250x200 dpi. The resolution of a 8"x10" print is 125x100 dpi.

Because the Pixera camera provides 1.2 million pixel resolution (1260 x 960 under Windows), you can determine the image resolution in dpi (dots per inch), simply by dividing 1000 by the dimension of your image. For a 4"x5" print, for instance, the horizontal resolution in dpi is 1000/4 = 250 and the vertical resolution is 1000/5=200 dpi.

Back to Personal FAQ >

What is the advantage of a through-the-lens viewfinder versus an optical viewfinder?

A through-the-lens viewfinder enables an extremely accurate image capture. This is often referred to as "what you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG). It also allows for manual color correction of your photos. An optical viewfinder on the other hand, may cause distortion.
